Soda Bread

Soda Bread

This is probably the easiest loaf there is to make. It needs no needing and contains just four ingredients.

We first made soda bread years ago in the oven. Served with lashings of salty butter, it was a treat. You have to eat the whole loaf in a day though, it doesn’t keep well, but that’s never been a problem in this house.

It’s a great loaf for kids to make too as it’s quick and easy.

BBQ Temperature

200°C

Ingredients

  • 250g wholemeal flour
  • 250g plain flour (not strong bread flour), plus some extra for dusting
  • 1 tsp table salt
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 420ml buttermilk

Method

  1. Setup your Egg for an indirect cook using the ConvEGGtor, stainless steel grid on top and then your baking stone. Set the Egg to 200°C and allow everything to warm up.
  2. Put all your dry ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly.
  3. Add your buttermilk and mix until your dough comes together.
  4. Form into a ball shape and use a knife to cut into 4 almost all the way down.
  5. Place onto a circle of baking parchment.
  6. Separate the quarters a little and dust with flour.
  7. Put into the Egg to cook for 30 minutes.
  8. Once cooked allow to cool a little on a cooling rack, as long as you can wait before slicing thickly, and smothering with butter.
