Our Recommended Accessories for the Big Green Egg

Accessories for your Big Green Egg

There are a vast range of Big Green Egg accessories, so where do you start? It’s tempting to buy lots of accessories but we always advise customers to start small.  We’ve split accessories for your Big Green Egg into three categories ‘essentials’, our ‘favourites’ and ‘nice to have’.

The essentials are accessories we recommend to help you get started when you initially buy your Egg; the pre-requisites which will make using and cooking on your Egg easy.

Once you’ve mastered temperature control, used your Egg a few times and decided what type of cooks you want to do, then consider accessories from our favourites.

Cooking on your Egg is a lot of fun and a slippery slope when it comes to buying stuff. The desire to keep adding to the collection is strong.  Our final recommendations is a collection of nice-to-have kit.

Essential Accessories

Buying an Egg doesn’t come cheap.  We have pulled together a list of essential items (not all Big Green Egg), which we recommend:

  • Ash Tool
  • Silicone Mitt
  • Instant Read Thermometer
  • Decent Foil

A brollie and drink of your choice are also compulsory when cooking outdoors!

Favourite Accessories

Using the Egg nearly every day and running a cookery school, we have a go-to list of accessories that we wouldn’t be without

  • Skillet
  • Rotisserie
  • Tandoor Ring
  • Baking Stone
  • HORL Knife Sharpener

The Essentials

The Ash Tool is a compulsory purchase.  You need to be able to keep your Egg clean and remove the ash, which collects at the bottom of your Egg every 5 or 6 cooks. This tool helps maintain EGGcellent airflow.  It can also be used to rake the charcoal when loading or refuelling your Egg.

You’ll quickly find that you need a set of gloves, when changing surfaces in your Egg or moving dishes out of your Egg.  Having tried a lot of gloves over the years, we prefer a silicone mitt with a cuff.  We like a glove which flexes and allow some movement when you’re wearing it.  Big Green Egg do a decent one.  We use gloves for the cookery school which we found on Amazon.

Tip:  To wash, turn them inside out, before placing in the washing machine, when you remove them pop them on your vertical chicken roaster to dry!!

When cooking on your Egg, you’ll be cooking to temperature to ensure food is safe to eat.  Your best friend is an instant read thermometer and our favourite is the Thermapen.

This foil is excellent for wrapping meat while it rests and for keeping food hot. It is the best tool for cleaning your grid.

Heat up your Egg, scrunch a piece into a ball and press onto the bars or desired surface and move backwards and forwards.  You’ll notice it moulds to the bars and the grid comes up clean in a few scrubs.

Our Favourites

Bigga Skillet

We love cooking in a skillet and have two preferred pans:

They both come in two different sizes; of course we have them in all sizes but we’d recommend having a regular size in one and a larger size in another.

The Rotisserie brings some theatre to your cooks and endless recipe ideas. Your meat rotates and bastes in its own juices.  Obviously ther are more accessories so you can tumble chicken wings, cook fish and veg.

Note:  You need a plug socket close to your Egg.

This nifty contraption turns your Egg into a Tandoor Oven.  Remove the rEGGulator and hang the 6 skewers through the top vent of your Egg.  Think chicken tikka for curry or vegetable skewers.

Smoked Chocolate Brownie

The baking stone is a must for pizza cooking but is also essential if you fancy giving baking a try on your Egg.  The Egg is great for cakes and Mrs MeatSmokeFire steals the show at our cookery classes with her Chocolate Brownie.

Asparagus and Prosciutto Pastries

Having sharp knives is a must for us.  Over the years, we’ve tried lots of different knife sharpeners from whetstones, steels and electric sharpeners. They can produce excellent results if you know what you’re doing, but it can be tricky and take some time to master.  We think the HORL knife sharpener is the easiest knife sharpener to use and it both sharpens and hones your blades.  It looks and feels amazing, which is no surprise as it’s another fine example of German engineering.

‘Nice to Have’ Accessories

We’re often asked for recommendations for additional Big Green accessories, usually for birthday or christmas ideas.  With the hindsight of having used the Egg for many years, these are other accessories we use:

  1. EGGspander Basket
  2. Wok for EGGspander System
  3. Half Moon Cast Iron Searing Grid
  4. Half Moon Baking Stone
  5. Vertical Chicken Roaster
  6. Stainless Steel Fire Bowl

TIP:  We recommend buying the half-moon cooking surfaces, so if you buy the EGGspander System at any point, these surfaces will be compatible.
