Say Hello to the Dual Zone Deflector Kit

Big Green Egg has replaced two of the most popular accessories in the range — the ConvEGGtor and the EGGspander basket — with a single new system: the Dual Zone Deflector Kit. If you're used to the old setup, here's what's changing and what it means for you.

What's in the box

The kit is two pieces: a stainless steel Deflector Basket, and two ceramic Split Deflectors shaped like half-moons.

That's the clever part. Push both half-moons together in the bottom of the basket and they form a full circle — a complete indirect heat shield, exactly like your old ConvEGGtor, for low and slow cooks. Pull them apart and set just one in place, and you've got a direct zone on one side of the EGG and an indirect zone on the other — sear a steak on one half, keep it warm and gently cooked on the other, all in the same cook.

We've always loved the old EGGspander for exactly this kind of flexibility, and the new kit does the same job with less fuss: fewer pieces to keep track of, and a much easier basket to live with day to day.

The bit we really like: the handles

The basket has two handles, and once you've used them you won't want to go back. Lift the whole deflector assembly in or out of a hot EGG in one go, rather than fishing around for a single hot ConvEGGtor stone with tongs. It also sits a little higher off the coals than the old basket, which helps airflow underneath it. Small change, genuinely useful in practice.
