The Old Fashioned traditionally uses a twist of orange peel, here we take the peel and a slice or two of the orange and grill them to burn the edges and add a bit of a barbecue twist.
For those of you who aren’t bourbon fans I’ve done a second version that uses the orange juice to add sweetness.
Ingredients
Burnt Orange Old Fashioned
- A slice of orange peel and a slice of orange
- 60ml of Bourbon (I used Jack Daniels)
- 1tsp of granulated sugar
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- Ice
Twisted Burnt Orange Old Fashioned
- A slice of orange peel and a slice of orange
- Juice of 1 orange
- 60ml of Bourbon (I used Jack Daniels)
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- Ice
Method
- Fire up your Big Green Egg to about 250°C with the cast iron griddle in a direct setup.
- Once the griddle is hot add the peel and the orange slice.
- Sprinkle the orange slice with some sugar which will caramelise.
- After about 2 minutes turn and sear the other side. You’re looking to burn the peel edges and get a some caramelisation on the slice of orange.
Burnt Orange Old Fashioned
- Add the sugar, bitters and bourbon to a glass and stir until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the peel and ice.
Twisted Burnt Orange Old Fashioned
- Squeeze the orange juice into your glass and add the bourbon, burnt orange, bitters and ice.
